Licenses, application pathways and examination requirements

Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.

Cosmetologist

Practitioner license under 32 M.R.S. section 14226. Separate statutory professions of hair design, barber hair styling, aesthetics and nail technology are outside the requested Cosmetology profession. Demonstrator licensure is repealed by section 14234; the Program laws page confirms special-event permits were repealed in 2019.

Licensing authority: Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Barbering and Cosmetology Licensing Program · Application information

Licensure by statutory endorsement under sections 14231 A and 8003 H
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Denial
No statutory cause for denial may exist.
Existing license
Hold a license from a United States jurisdiction maintaining substantially equivalent requirements.
Fees
Pay the applicable license fee.
Good standing
Be in good standing in every current or former licensure jurisdiction, without pending complaint, allegation or investigation, suspension, restrictions, surrender or revocation (section 8003-H(1)).
Lower ranked rule
Chapter 21 section 1(3) of the 2016 rules states: "An applicant applying by endorsement shall be subject to the Maine required two-part examination." The later statutory endorsement process applies notwithstanding contrary chapter provisions; that older rule demand is retained here as an applicant condition. The current official Program disclosure states that its Maine Laws and Rules portion was discontinued July 1, 2012.
Process
The current licensing portal offers license by endorsement/license transfer. This route is the substantially-equivalent-jurisdiction statutory process, distinct from discretionary section 14231 recognition.

Initial license fee deadline
Pay the initial license fee within one year of notice of passing the examination; otherwise retake the full examination. The director may waive that period for extenuating circumstances (32 M.R.S. section 14229-A).
