Try these 10 sample questions from the Standard First Aid theory test practice bank. Each includes the answer and explanation. Continue with the interactive practice above to review the full question set.

  1. 1A colleague cuts a hand at work. You provide immediate care while medical help is on its way. Which phase of care are you providing?

    1. A.Definitive treatment
    2. B.First aidCorrect answer: B
    3. C.Rehabilitation
    4. D.Convalescent care

Explanation: The source states: "First Aid is the immediate management of a person who is injured or has suddenly taken ill." Immediate care of this new injury is first aid; the other terms describe different stages or purposes of care.

Reference: SRFAC Standard First Aid Provider Manual — p. 2, 1.1

  2. 2An adult has neck pain after diving into shallow water. The area is safe, breathing is normal and emergency help is coming. What should the first aider do about the head and neck?

    1. A.Support them in the position found to limit movementCorrect answer: A
    2. B.Flex them forward to test the casualty's range of movement
    3. C.Rotate them gently to find the least painful position
    4. D.Extend them backwards to restore the usual neck curve

Explanation: The source states: "Immobilise and support the head in the position found" Suspected spinal injury calls for support with minimal movement, not range-of-motion testing or attempted correction.

Reference: SRFAC Standard First Aid Provider Manual — p. 21, Spinal Injury

  3. 3While eating, an adult becomes unable to speak, breathe or cough. Which airway condition should the first aider recognise?

    1. A.Complete foreign-body airway obstructionCorrect answer: A
    2. B.Partial foreign-body airway obstruction
    3. C.An acute episode of bronchial asthma
    4. D.An acute episode of hyperventilation

Explanation: The source states: "In complete (severe) airway obstruction, the casualty is unable to speak, breathe or cough" Loss of all three functions indicates severe complete obstruction rather than an effective cough with partial obstruction.

Reference: SRFAC Standard First Aid Provider Manual — p. 37, Recognition

  4. 4A first aider explains why shock can become fatal after serious injury. Which primary physiological function is impaired?

    1. A.Pulmonary ventilation
    2. B.Alveolar gas diffusion
    3. C.Neuromuscular conduction
    4. D.Systemic tissue perfusionCorrect answer: D

Explanation: The source states: "collapse of the circulatory system." Shock is a circulatory failure that compromises tissue perfusion. Ventilation, diffusion and nerve conduction are genuine physiological functions but are not the defining failure in shock.

Reference: SRFAC Standard First Aid Provider Manual — p. 52, Shock

  5. 5A casualty has a broken limb with a wound and a visible bone end. Which fracture term specifically identifies the associated break in the overlying skin?

    1. A.Closed fracture
    2. B.Stress fracture
    3. C.Greenstick fracture
    4. D.Open fractureCorrect answer: D

Explanation: The source states: "Open fracture – a wound accompanies the fracture and the overlying skin is broken." The defining feature is the associated open wound; the other names describe fractures without specifying this skin break.

Reference: SRFAC Standard First Aid Provider Manual — p. 76, Types of Fracture

  6. 6A superficial burn affects only the outer layer of the skin. Which anatomical layer is involved?

    1. A.Dermis
    2. B.EpidermisCorrect answer: B
    3. C.Subcutaneous tissue
    4. D.Muscle

Explanation: The source states: "Epidermis – The outer layer" The epidermis is the outer layer involved in a superficial burn. Dermis, subcutaneous tissue and muscle lie deeper.

Reference: SRFAC Standard First Aid Provider Manual — pp. 98–99, Skin Structure; Superficial Burn

  7. 7One eye has been splashed by a chemical. While rinsing with clean water, in which direction should the flow pass across the eye?

    1. A.From the outer corner towards the nose
    2. B.From the lower lid towards the upper lid
    3. C.From the nose side outwardsCorrect answer: C
    4. D.From the upper lid towards the lower lid

Explanation: The source states: "Irrigate from the nose side of the eye outwards" This direction helps prevent contaminated runoff entering the other eye.

Reference: SRFAC Standard First Aid Provider Manual — p. 109, Chemicals – Actions

  8. 8A lay rescuer is giving adult hands-only CPR. What chest-compression rate is specified by the Singapore guideline?

    1. A.60–80 compressions/min
    2. B.80–100 compressions/min
    3. C.100–120 compressions/minCorrect answer: C
    4. D.120–140 compressions/min

Explanation: The source states: "The compression rate should be 100–120/min." The national target is 100–120 compressions per minute. This is knowledge of CPR quality rather than a practical scoring exercise.

Reference: Singapore Basic Cardiac Life Support and Automated External Defibrillation Guidelines 2026 — Adult one-rescuer CPR, 6(c)

  9. 9After urgent injuries have been attended to, a first aider reassures a frightened casualty and protects them from cold. Which first-aid aim is most directly illustrated?

    1. A.To promote recovery
    2. B.To preserve life
    3. C.To prevent condition from worsening
    4. D.To provide comfort and reliefCorrect answer: D

Explanation: The source states: "To provide comfort and relief." The examples under this aim include reassurance and protection from extreme heat or cold. The question concerns relief of distress after urgent care.

Reference: SRFAC Standard First Aid Provider Manual — p. 2, Aims of First Aid, 4

  10. 10After a head impact, a conscious athlete reports a brief loss of awareness, dizziness and a gap in memory around the incident. Which head-injury pattern should a first aider recognise?

    1. A.Compression
    2. B.Skull fracture
    3. C.ConcussionCorrect answer: C
    4. D.Spinal fracture

Explanation: The source states: "Loss of memory of events at the time of, or immediately preceding the injury." The manual groups the brief loss of consciousness, dizziness and memory gap under concussion. Recognition prompts first-aid care and referral, not definitive diagnosis.

Key exam facts

Provider
The Singapore Resuscitation and First Aid Council (SRFAC) sets the national standard and accredits training centres. Accredited training centres deliver and invigilate the SFA theory assessment; SRFAC is not a booking vendor.
Format
In-person, closed-book, timed written theory assessment invigilated by a Chief Instructor and/or Instructor; paper or controlled electronic delivery is possible. SERA publishes a multiple-choice implementation. This bank covers only knowledge, including CPR(Hands-Only)+AED; practical tests are separate and are also required for full provider certification.
Time limit
The SFA syllabus allows 30 minutes for the theory assessment, distinct from training and the 210-minute practical assessment block. The 10 December 2025 integrity reminder describes timed theory assessment at approximately 1 minute per question; the actual duration must be communicated before assessment.
Passing score
SRFAC recommends 80% correct answers for the theory test. SERA applies 24/30 in its 30-MCQ implementation. Passing the theory test alone does not complete provider certification.
Exam fee
Fees depend on the delivering centre and package. Published example: SERA full classroom SFA course and assessments cost SGD 169.00 before GST / SGD 184.21 including GST, before funding. Funding eligibility and final prices are conditional and subject to change. That page does not quote a separate theory-only examination fee; the listed amount is a combined course price, not a national theory-only tariff.
