The alternatives are written-exam substitutions, and do not waive the interview. A specialty must be accepted for the specific practice for which Tennessee licensure is sought.
- Specialty assignment
- Rule 0400-45-09-.05(3) requires one or more Board-approved specialty examinations appropriate to the occupation sought. The anyOf node preserves the named driller specialties; the Board determines the appropriate category or categories and may require additional unnamed specialties. The alternatives are written-exam substitutions, and do not waive the interview. A specialty must be accepted for the specific practice for which Tennessee licensure is sought.
- Reissuance exam conflict
- The 2025 statute requires the approved licensure test including the interview before issuance. Rule 0400-45-09-.06(2)(i) provides the following lower-ranked waiver: (i) If the application, renewal fee or requirements for continuing education are not received by the Director by the date of expiration, the license shall expire. Expired licenses may be reissued without examination or board appearance if the renewal fee and application are submitted within twelve (12) months of the date of expiration, all requirements for continuing education have been met and no additional monies are owed to the Department. The statutory examinations remain leaves, and the rule's waiver is an applicant condition.
- Out of state license
- Currently hold a license in good standing in the same category in another jurisdiction; that jurisdiction must grant reciprocal privileges to Tennessee licensees. A license or examination belonging to that other jurisdiction is an applicant condition, not a Tennessee route leaf.
- Reciprocity interview conflict
- Public Chapter 507, Section 2, effective July 1, 2025, requires the Board to administer the approved licensure test, including an interview, before issuance. The lower-ranked Rule 0400-45-09-.06(1)(e) states: (e) Reciprocity to drillers and installers licensed in other states will be granted by the Department provided the applicant makes a written request for reciprocity and the applicant meets the requirements of the written exam as required under paragraph (6) of Rule 0400-45-09-.05, the applicant is currently licensed in the state for the same category and in good standing in that state and reciprocal privileges have been granted by that state to a licensee in Tennessee. An oral interview will not be required. The interview is retained under the controlling statute, and the Board rule's stated exemption is disclosed here.
- Reciprocity request
- Make a written request for reciprocity under Rule 0400-45-09-.06(1)(e).

- Policy DWR-WGW-P-1 accepts passing NGWA general and/or specialty written exams in place of the corresponding Tennessee written exams.
An examination for unrelated work does not establish competence for the requested license.

Educational-equivalency examinations are applicant qualifications, not licensing-exam leaves.
- Experience
- Have at least two years of experience, before applying, in the occupation for which the license is sought under Rule 0400-45-09-.02(2).
- Experience proof
- Under Rule 0400-45-09-.03, provide either the required list of ten wells spanning at least two years, including owner, location, use, construction features, completion date, work and approximate cost, or occupational licenses/certificates covering two years in the occupation.
- Expired application
- After the 12-month no-examination reissuance window in Rule 0400-45-09-.06(2)(i), Rule 0400-45-09-.06(2)(c) requires a new application for a valid license; satisfy the current initial-application requirements.
- Geothermal experience
- Monitor-well or water-well drilling experience satisfies the geothermal-driller experience requirement under Rule 0400-45-09-.05(12). The interview exception for existing Tennessee water-well drillers who applied before January 1, 2004 does not cover new applications on the evaluation date.

An examination for unrelated work does not establish competence for the requested license.
- Written passing grade
- Pass the general examination and each required specialty category with at least 70 percent under Rule 0400-45-09-.05(6).

- Policy DWR-WGW-P-1 accepts passing NGWA general and/or specialty written exams in place of the corresponding Tennessee written exams.
An examination for unrelated work does not establish competence for the requested license.

- Specialty assignment

- Education
- Complete grade 10 or submit equivalent achievement through approved short courses or written examinations; up to four additional years of full-time employment may substitute for equal education years under Rule 0400-45-09-.02(3). Educational-equivalency examinations are applicant qualifications, not licensing-exam leaves.

An examination for unrelated work does not establish competence for the requested license.
- Written passing grade
- Pass the general examination and each required specialty category with at least 70 percent under Rule 0400-45-09-.05(6).

- Policy DWR-WGW-P-1 accepts passing NGWA general and/or specialty written exams in place of the corresponding Tennessee written exams.
An examination for unrelated work does not establish competence for the requested license.

- Specialty assignment
- Rule 0400-45-09-.05(3) requires one or more Board-approved specialty examinations appropriate to the occupation sought. The anyOf node preserves the named driller specialties; the Board determines the appropriate category or categories and may require additional unnamed specialties. An examination for unrelated work does not establish competence for the requested license.
- Written passing grade

The alternatives are written-exam substitutions, and do not waive the interview. A specialty must be accepted for the specific practice for which Tennessee licensure is sought.
- Specialty assignment
- Rule 0400-45-09-.05(3) requires one or more Board-approved specialty examinations appropriate to the occupation sought.
