Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.

Water Well Contractor License

License for constructing, reconstructing or treating water wells in Kansas.

Licensing authority: Kansas Department of Health and Environment · Application information

Annual license renewal
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Continuing Education
File the approved continuing-education report. The contractor or designated person must earn at least eight approved units each year beginning with the first full licensure year or renewal period. KDHE states no more than four hours may be safety training and no more than two may be online education.
Designated Person
When the examination-qualified designated person leaves employment, K.A.R. 28-30-3(d) separately requires replacement with a designated person who takes and passes the examination within 90 days; the corresponding continuation route is retained.
Military Spouse Fees
Military spouses qualify for the K.S.A. 48-3406a(u) renewal-fee exemption.
New License
KDHE states that a new license issued after June 1 does not require renewal for that immediate renewal period.
Renewal
Renew annually before July 1 by submitting the prescribed renewal form and paying license and drill-rig registration fees; the statutory term runs July 1 through June 30.
Well Records
File records for every well constructed, reconstructed or plugged during the preceding licensure period, and supply outstanding information or records KDHE requested.

Official no-examination sources

Effective from 2026-09-22.

Licensure through recognition of an existing occupational credential, including the statutory probationary period
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Board Instructions
KDHE’s general Water Well Program Licensing instructions state: "To become a Kansas Licensed Water Well Contractor requires submitting to us a completed application, successful completion of a written exam and submitting the required fees to us." The notwithstanding-law recognition provisions of K.S.A. 48-3406 and 48-3406a control these separate statutory routes; the general instructions are retained so the applicant can see KDHE’s stated administrative demand.
Conduct
Satisfy K.S.A. 48-3406(c)(2)(C)–(H): qualifying professional conduct and discipline history, no disqualifying criminal record, financial proof only to the extent required of comparable applicants, fees unless exempt, and a signed affidavit that application and employment history are true.
Eligible Applicant
The applicant has established or intends to establish Kansas residency, or is a military servicemember or spouse residing or planning to reside in Kansas due to an assigned military station.
Existing Credential
Hold a current valid occupational license or governmental certification from a United States jurisdiction with a scope of practice KDHE determines similar; at least one year of work in the occupation is required.
Inactive Practice
If the applicant has not been in active practice during the preceding two years, subsection (d) permits additional testing, training, monitoring or continuing education. Subsection (j) limits it to materially different Kansas law or additional knowledge or skill. The statute identifies no examination for this individualized testing; it is an applicant condition, not an invented exam leaf.
Military Spouse Fees
Military spouses of military servicemembers receive the fee exemption stated in parallel K.S.A. 48-3406a(u).
Other Discharge
Under subsection (k), KDHE may grant a license or temporary permit to an otherwise qualified person separated from service under less than honorable conditions or with a general discharge under honorable conditions.
Probation
Initial issuance under subsection (c)(2) is probationary for no more than six months, then becomes nonprobationary on completion of the probationary period.
Public Safety
KDHE may deny an application or decline a temporary or probationary license when issuance may jeopardize public health and safety under subsection (l).

Conduct
Satisfy K.S.A. 48-3406(c)(2)(C)–(H): qualifying professional conduct and discipline history, no disqualifying criminal record, financial proof only to the extent required of comparable applicants, fees unless exempt, and a signed affidavit that application and employment history are true.

Licensure based on work experience in an unregulated jurisdiction
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Board Instructions

Experience
At least three years of occupational work during the four years immediately preceding application.
Issuance
K.S.A. 48-3406(e) permits issuance on work experience; subsection (c)(2)’s six-month probation statement is expressly tied to issuance under (c)(2), so it is not imposed on (e) by inference.
