Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse (CPHON®)

CPHON® certification is for registered nurses who practice in pediatric hematology/oncology – whether in clinical practice, nursing administration, education, research, or consultation.

Licensing authority: Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation · Application information

Initial by examination
Applicant
Initial CPHON candidates, including those whose certification has lapsed; this task excludes renewal pathways.
Dates
The current official program and preparation pages adopt the supplied outline and 2026 manual at the evaluation date; official start/end dates for this credential, route, and examination version are not stated and remain null.
Education
CNE/NCPD must have an acceptable accredited provider/approver; up to five of the ten hours may be CME in oncology or hematology or CPE. Joint Accreditation/IPCE must specify ANCC, ACCME, or ACPE hours. Detailed wording is retained from the current 2026 credential-specific manual; the program landing page summarizes CE as oncology, while ONCC's initial-certification policy describes education in the specialty.
Eligibility
All eligibility criteria apply at application and examination: current active unencumbered RN license in the US, its territories, or Canada; at least 24 months of RN experience in the previous 48 months; at least 2,000 hours of pediatric oncology or hematology nursing practice in the previous 48 months; and at least 10 contact hours of oncology or hematology nursing continuing education or an academic elective in oncology or hematology nursing in the previous 36 months. Nurses educated and/or licensed outside the United States, its territories, or Canada must have their education and licensure evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a foreign credential evaluation service. Only those whose evaluation indicates U.S. equivalency are eligible to apply for certification; the certification application cannot be processed, reviewed, or approved until the evaluation is received. This foreign-education/licensure eligibility condition also applies when seeking the scoped US examination route; it does not add another examination dependency or assert availability of an international test-site window.
Exam
Pass the single CPHON Test; RN licensure is an eligibility qualification, not an additional examination dependency supplied by this route.
Practice
Clinical practice, administration, education, research, or consultation, including direct/indirect care; the position must require an RN/APRN, including a role also open to other licensed providers if RN/APRN is among the allowed license types.
Testing
US testing is year-round; approved candidates receive an ATT with a personal 90-day scheduling/testing window. The current site's high-volume notice allows up to eight weeks for application processing, so the manual's four-to-six-week estimate is not treated as a guarantee.
