Physical Therapist
South Dakota license to practice physical therapy as a physical therapist, issued by the State Board of Physical Therapy under SDCL chapter 36-10.
Licensing authority: South Dakota Board of Physical Therapy · Application information
Physical therapist licensure by application and national examination (SDCL 36 10 27, 36 10 29)
- Application
- File a notarized application with the State Board of Physical Therapy and pay the $120 initial application fee (SDCL 36-10-27(1)-(2); ARSD 20:66:01:01).
- Character
- Present evidence satisfactory to the board of good moral, ethical, and professional character (SDCL 36-10-27(3)).
- Criminal Background Check
- Submit fingerprints for a state and federal criminal background check; the board may not issue a license before receiving the results (SDCL 36-10-27.1).
- Education
- Graduation from a physical therapy program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education or by the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation (the Board checklist names CAPTE), or a course of professional instruction the board finds equivalent (SDCL 36-10-27(4)).
- English Proficiency
- An applicant relying on equivalent instruction must have passed an English proficiency examination approved by the board or completed two years of secondary or postsecondary education in an institution in which instruction is conducted in English (SDCL 36-10-27(4)(b)); the application asks internationally educated applicants whether they passed the TOEFL.
- Examination Score
- The national examination must be passed with a grade acceptable to the board; the applicant has FSBPT send the NPTE score report directly to the Board (SDCL 36-10-27(5); application page 2).
- License Verification
- Have every state in which the applicant holds or held licensure send verification of current and past licensure, including disciplinary status, directly to the board (Board licensing checklist).
Physical therapist licensure by reciprocity for a holder of a physical therapy license from another U.S. state, territory or the District of Columbia (SDCL 36 10 31, 36 10 32)
- Application
- File a notarized application with the State Board of Physical Therapy and pay the $120 initial application fee (SDCL 36-10-27(1)-(2); ARSD 20:66:01:01).
- Application Form
- Apply on the form provided by the board and pay the application fee established in rule (SDCL 36-10-32(1), (3)).
- License Verification
- Have every state in which the applicant holds or held licensure send verification of current and past licensure, including disciplinary status, directly to the board (Board licensing checklist).
- Prior License
- Hold a license or certificate to practice physical therapy issued by a board of the District of Columbia or a U.S. state or territory whose licensure requirements were, at the date of issuance, substantially equal to those of SDCL chapter 36-10 (SDCL 36-10-31).
- Statutory Wording
- SDCL 36-10-31 permits the board to issue this license 'without examination'; SDCL 36-10-32(2) requires 'the evidence required by this chapter and rules of the board', and the Board's physical therapist checklist requires 'NPTE Exam Scores (requested through FSBPT)' of every applicant, so the NPTE-PT is mounted and no examination is administered at application.
Physical therapist licensure without examination for an applicant registered by FSBPT or who has already passed a recognized national examination (SDCL 36 10 30)
- Eligibility
- SDCL 36-10-30 lets the board issue a license 'without examination' to an applicant who (1) 'Is registered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy' or (2) 'Has passed a national examination recognized by the board, with a grade acceptable to the board, and meets the requirements for licensure under this chapter and rules promulgated by the board.' 'Without examination' means no examination is administered at application; the Board's single physical therapist checklist still requires NPTE exam scores requested through FSBPT.
- Fsbpt Registration
- An applicant qualifying under SDCL 36-10-30(1) relies on FSBPT registration; the statute does not define that registration further.
- License Verification
- Have every state in which the applicant holds or held licensure send verification of current and past licensure, including disciplinary status, directly to the board (Board licensing checklist).
Biennial renewal of a physical therapist license (SDCL 36 10 33, 36 10 51)
- Continuing Education
- Complete thirty continuing education hours during the two-year license period and sign a statement confirming completion on the renewal application; the board may waive the requirement for illness, disability, military service, or financial hardship (SDCL 36-10-51; ARSD 20:66:03:01-04).
- Deadline
- The license expires on January first of the second year after issuance; failure to renew on or before July first of that year forfeits the license (SDCL 36-10-33).
- Renewal Fee
- Pay the $120 biennial renewal fee (SDCL 36-10-33; ARSD 20:66:01:01(2)).
