Licenses, application pathways and examination requirements
Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.
Private Applicator License
Licensing authority: Texas Department of Agriculture
Add aerial application certification
- Existing qualification
- Hold private qualification in an appropriate agricultural use category and pass the aerial category test. Additional aerial continuing education applies.
Convert a pre 1989 private certificate to a license
- Historical certificate
- Hold a certificate issued before January 10, 1989. Complete Extension private training, pass the private test and obtain a private license; this satisfies certificate recertification one time.
Initial private licensure
- Agricultural production
- Meet Agriculture Code §76.112 private-applicator property, agricultural-commodity and employment conditions.
- Application
- Apply and pay the prescribed private-license fee; a license revoked within two years bars issuance under §76.112(g).
- Training
- Complete Extension or department-approved private-applicator training. Pass within one year of training; if licensing is incomplete five years after passing, repeat training and testing.
New private licensure after expiration exceeding one year
- Agricultural production
- Meet Agriculture Code §76.112 private-applicator property, agricultural-commodity and employment conditions.
- Application
- Apply and pay the prescribed private-license fee; a license revoked within two years bars issuance under §76.112(g).
- Lapse
- Meet all new private-license requirements. Previously held special categories require corresponding retraining and examinations under §7.24(w); they are covered by the separate special-category routes.
- Training
- Complete Extension or department-approved private-applicator training. Pass within one year of training; if licensing is incomplete five years after passing, repeat training and testing.
Alternative military full licensure: current foreign license
- Expedited processing
- Chapter 55 requires prompt provisional issuance during processing or full issuance, followed by the §55.005 expedited full-license process.
- Military status
- Military service member, veteran or spouse under Occupations Code Chapter 55.
- Prerequisite waiver
- Section 55.004(b) permits the executive director to waive any prerequisite after reviewing credentials. Retained examination leaves show currently offered examinations implicated by ordinary requirements; an individual waiver determines what this applicant must sit.
- Qualification
- Hold a current, good-standing other-state license similar in scope under §55.004(a)(1). Its examination is prior applicant evidence, not a Texas leaf.
- Recognition without texas license
- Section 55.0041 separately authorizes qualifying military members or spouses to practice on an officially recognized current out-of-state licence without obtaining a Texas license, after the required application, orders, spouse marriage evidence and affidavit. This is an applicant alternative, not a newly invented Texas credential.
Alternative military full licensure: recent texas license
- Expedited processing
- Chapter 55 requires prompt provisional issuance during processing or full issuance, followed by the §55.005 expedited full-license process.
- Military status
- Military service member, veteran or spouse under Occupations Code Chapter 55.
- Prerequisite waiver
- Section 55.004(b) permits the executive director to waive any prerequisite after reviewing credentials. Retained examination leaves show currently offered examinations implicated by ordinary requirements; an individual waiver determines what this applicant must sit.
- Qualification
- Held the corresponding Texas license within five years preceding application under §55.004(a)(2).
Private licensure with military training credit
- Agricultural production
- Meet Agriculture Code §76.112 private-applicator property, agricultural-commodity and employment conditions.
- Application
- Apply and pay the prescribed private-license fee; a license revoked within two years bars issuance under §76.112(g).
- Military credit
- Military service-member or veteran experience is credited as equivalent to the training in §7.21(b)(4)(A)–(F); the private examination remains required.
- Training
- Complete Extension or department-approved private-applicator training. Pass within one year of training; if licensing is incomplete five years after passing, repeat training and testing.
Add Livestock Protection Collar certification
- Held credential
- Hold a private applicator license or existing certified-private applicator certificate.
- Training
- Complete the corresponding TDA specialized predator-management training and pass the corresponding examination with at least 70%.
Add M 44 certification
- Held credential
- Hold a private applicator license or existing certified-private applicator certificate.
- Training
- Complete the corresponding TDA specialized predator-management training and pass the corresponding examination with at least 70%.
Five year private recertification
- Certificate or license
- Certified private holders who do not convert must satisfy the same recertification requirements. Licensed private holders also renew their five-year license by application and fee. Certificates issued before January 10, 1989 remain historical credentials, not current initial-issuance licenses.
- Dual licensing
- A private applicant also licensed commercial or noncommercial may satisfy private recertification by meeting that license’s recertification requirements under §7.24(z).
- Exam or education
- The examination is an optional alternative to 15 CEUs per five-year recertification cycle, including two in laws and regulations and two in IPM. A passing recertification examination earns all 15 CEUs; CEUs can be used instead if examination attempts fail.
Obtain optional soil fumigation category certification
- Option
- Category 11 is available to every pesticide license type. A private applicator may instead apply soil fumigants without adding this category if the label’s EPA-approved training requirement is met.
