When Category 1 is selected, regulatory pest control is for state, federal or other government employees or agents using pesticides for pests regulated by state or federal law.
Category02
When Category 02 is selected: Consultation and demonstration covers pesticide advice, recommendations, public demonstrations and instruction in restricted-use pesticides.
Category03
When Category 03 is selected: Agricultural pest control covers agricultural commodities and properties, greenhouses and nurseries, and animal feed, bedding or bodies; it excludes fumigants.
Category04
When Category 04 is selected: Ornamental and turf pest control covers maintenance and production of landscaping, ornamental plants, lawns and turf.
Category05
When Category 05 is selected: Antifouling paint certification covers EPA-registered antifouling paints.
Category06
When Category 06 is selected: Aquatic pest control covers pesticide application to waters of the state.
Category07
When Category 07 is selected: Structural pest control excludes fumigants and general-use antimicrobial pesticides.

The Alaska Public Health Manual excludes control of mosquitoes and biting flies and assigns those activities to Category 10.
Category09
When Category 09 is selected: Right-of-way and industrial pest control covers roads, waysides, railroads, airfields, pipelines, power lines, tank farms and industrial sites.
Category10
When Category 10 is selected: Mosquito and biting fly pest control excludes aquatic applications; applying to water requires Category 6.
Category11
When Category 11 is selected: Aerial pest control is for pilots of manned or unmanned aircraft applying pesticides by air. Pilot qualification is an applicant condition, not a pesticide examination leaf.
Category12
When Category 12 is selected: Forest pest control covers forests, forest nurseries and forest seed production.
Category14
When Category 14 is selected: Pesticide research is for individuals conducting field research on pesticide use.
Category15

Category16
When Category 16 is selected: Non-soil fumigation covers fumigation other than soil. The January 2020 Non-Soil Fumigation Manual mistakenly calls its study-material paragraph Category Fifteen; its own boundary says all fumigants except soil fumigants, its examination passage says Category Sixteen, and 18 AAC 90.300(c)(16) controls the category identity. Product-specific training required by a product label is a condition.
Category17a
When Category 17a is selected: Full vertebrate pest control excludes sodium cyanide ejectors and sodium fluoroacetate collars for predator control.
Category17b
When Category 17b is selected: Limited vertebrate pest control - rodents is limited to rodent populations, indoors or outdoors.

When Category 18 is selected: Oilfield biocides covers use during oil and gas exploration, production, storage or transport.
Category20
When Category 20 is selected: Seed treatment covers seed or plant parts grown and stored for distribution and planting; it does not authorize fumigants.
Category Choice
Select each category appropriate to the proposed activities under 18 AAC 90.300(c). Passing one category examination does not authorize work in a different category; certification may cover one or more categories.
Certification Fee
Pay the $25 certification fee before the initial certificate is issued (18 AAC 90.860).
Certification Term
Certification is valid for no more than three years under 18 AAC 90.305(e); the July 2025 Core Manual describes one-, two- or three-year issuance based on the Core Exam score.
Core Passing Score
Pass the current Core Exam; the DEC form excuses another sitting when the applicant passed it in the previous 12 months. A prior passing score remains a requirement leaf for the currently offered examination.
Existing Certification
Applicant already certified and seeking an additional applicable category. The DEC registration form requires at least one Category Exam and excuses sitting the Core Exam again when it was passed in the last 12 months; the current Core Exam remains a leaf because its passing score is involved.
Insurance
For custom, commercial or contract use, the applicant or employer must provide liability insurance of at least $500,000 per person for bodily injury and $300,000 per incident for property damage. Local, state or federal agency employees and school employees acting in their employment activities are exempt under 18 AAC 90.620(c).
Issuance Discretion
DEC may impose certification conditions to protect health, safety, welfare, animals and the environment. Under 18 AAC 90.305(f), it may deny an applicant for unmet requirements, false or misleading application statements, past chapter noncompliance, FIFRA or pesticide-law convictions, or a final civil-penalty order.
Minimum Age
At least 18 years old (18 AAC 90.305(b)(1)).

When Category 8 is selected, public health pest control covers government-sponsored health programs for regulated pests and pesticides with medical or public-health importance.
Category15
Designated private-applicator declaration under 18 AAC 90.620(d) permits only non-fumigant pesticides, so Category 15 soil fumigation is outside this designation.
Category16
Designated private-applicator declaration under 18 AAC 90.620(d) permits only non-fumigant pesticides, so Category 16 non-soil fumigation is outside this designation.
Category17a
When Category 17a is selected: Full vertebrate pest control excludes sodium cyanide ejectors and sodium fluoroacetate collars for predator control.
Category17b
When Category 17b is selected: Limited vertebrate pest control - rodents is limited to rodent populations, indoors or outdoors.
Category17c
When Category 17c is selected: Predator control covers sodium cyanide ejectors and sodium fluoroacetate collars. Applicants must document required product-specific training before exam approval; the current DEC registration form says this exam is not available online.
Category18
Private Competency
18 AAC 90.305(c)(3) requires the competency areas in that subsection and 40 CFR 171.105(a) for designated private applicators of restricted-use pesticides. The Alaska manuals require the Core Exam and the category appropriate to the intended use.
Private Declaration
Declare in writing that only non-fumigant pesticides will be applied on property owned or leased by the applicant (18 AAC 90.620(d)); this declaration is an insurance exception, not an examination waiver.
Private Insurance
The insurance requirement in 18 AAC 90.620(a) is subject to the designated-private-applicator exception in 18 AAC 90.620(d).

Category14
When Category 14 is selected: Pesticide research is for individuals conducting field research on pesticide use.
Category15
When Category 15 is selected: Soil fumigation requires proof of EPA-approved registrant training before exam approval; the Alaska manual requires completion at least every three years. Registrant training is an applicant condition.

Prior Certification

Private Competency
18 AAC 90.305(c)(3) requires the competency areas in that subsection and 40 CFR 171.105(a) for designated private applicators of restricted-use pesticides. The Alaska manuals require the Core Exam and the category appropriate to the intended use.
