NICET In-Building Public Safety Communications Design Technician

NICET certification for engineering technicians who independently design in-building public safety communications systems.

Licensing authority: National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies · Application information

Initial by examination
Experience
At least two years full-time-equivalent ERCES technical experience including at least twelve months directly involved in ERCES design. Those twelve months may include systems layout, plan preparation, code compliance review, CAD drawings, submittals, propagation/attenuation calculations, RF strength/quality measurements and coordination with installers, clients, engineers or AHJs. Up to six months may be related ERCES experience, including the specified other code-driven/life-safety electrical systems roles and technical support/training.
Performance
Supervisor verification of every Design Performance Measure, 2801-7101 through 2801-7112; includes designing at least 10 active DAS or 15 passive DAS systems that passed acceptance testing.
Recommendation
Personal recommendation showing capacity for senior engineering technician responsibilities. The recommender must be a professional familiar with the candidate’s technical capabilities and background, able to attest to technical quality, responsibility and ethics. NICET accepts licensed professional engineers and the other listed appropriate professionals; the recommender cannot be a current or former performance verifier, relative, peer or subordinate.
Retest
If unsuccessful, wait 30 days; maximum three attempts within any twelve-month span.
Scheduling
Choose a six-month testing window; complete NICET application, affidavit and payment; schedule a proctored Pearson VUE appointment and obtain confirmation. This is rolling appointment testing, not a single annual test date.
Track
One-level Design track may be used independently from the installation track; no installation-track prerequisite exam is added.
Verifier
A current or previous supervisor in the documented work history must be technically competent and have authority to supervise, inspect or approve the work. Nontechnical supervisors, peers and subordinates cannot verify. Owners and equivalent company leaders must obtain an external qualified verifier; multiple current supervisors may verify singly or together as applicable, each completing Verifier Data.
