National Certified Patient Care Technician (NCPCT)
NCCT national certification demonstrating entry-level patient-care competency within the professional's regulated scope of practice.
Licensing authority: National Center for Competency Testing
Initial by examination
- Certification Conferral
- All required documentation and fees and a passing certification examination result are required; current-student permission to sit is not full certification. All eligibility alternatives are additionally subject to the general handbook restriction: Board of Testing members, Subject Matter Experts, verification staff and/or any certification vendors are not eligible to test within 2 years of their term, departure or role as a certification committee member.
- Date Applicability
- NCCT currently links the January 2025 plan and January 2026 revised handbook. The plan publishes a month of effectiveness, not a specific day; exact version, credential, route and claim start dates are left null. Retrieval and revision dates are not substituted for official effective dates.
- Eligibility Alternatives
- ["High school pathway: current student or graduate within five years of an NCCT-authorized Patient Care Technician program; submit program diploma/certificate or official signed transcript and high-school graduation documentation as applicable. Current high-school students receive provisional certification after passing; full certification requires all documents, submitted within two years of program completion.","Current postsecondary student: enrolled in an NCCT-authorized Patient Care Technician program, including a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship program; U.S. high-school graduate or equivalent. May test before graduation documents are submitted, but must submit diploma, certificate of completion or official signed transcript with graduation date within two years of program completion.","Graduate: NCCT-authorized postsecondary Patient Care Technician program completed within five years, including U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship programs; U.S. high-school graduate or equivalent; required graduation documentation before testing.","Experience: one year of verifiable full-time Patient Care Technician employment, or equivalent 2080 hours, within five years, obtained in the United States or its territories; U.S. high-school diploma or equivalent; employer-completed Patient Care Technician Certification Qualification by Experience Form verifying experience under a certified/licensed physician or primary care provider. Volunteer work, internship and self-employment are not treated as qualifying employed practitioner experience.","Military: Patient Care Technician training or equivalent during U.S. military service within five years; U.S. high-school graduate or equivalent; current SMART transcript or DD214 establishing relevant formal medical-services training completed within five years. Handbook p. 17 separately states active military or veterans without formal military training meet the Experience requirements.","Instructor: the general handbook Route 5 requires discipline-specific recent teaching experience, practitioner experience and an employer-completed Qualification by Experience form. The current official Patient Care Technician eligibility quiz specifies at least one year of current PCT teaching in the past five years at an NCCT-authorized school, at least one year of PCT practitioner experience and U.S. high-school graduation or equivalent. Teaching does not substitute for practitioner experience. The PCT one-page eligibility sheet and handbook p. 15 list the other alternatives; the instructor alternative is supported by handbook pp. 7 and 17 together with the same-discipline official quiz."]
- Optional Facts
- No separate examination identifier is established by the originals; EX-0506 is printed on the detailed test plan and is not adopted as an exam code. Application URL is left null because the linked enrollment workflow was not needed to establish the route. No specific passing score or fee is submitted: the current FAQ and handbook use different scaled-score descriptions, which do not alter the established answer-scored pass/fail nature.
- Scheduling
- On-demand computer-based examinations with requested-date appointments subject to NCCT approval and site availability. Applications must arrive at least 14 days before the requested test date; completed approved applications receive date/location authorization. Non-current-student eligibility documents must arrive 14 days before the date; applications and corresponding fees remain valid for one year. Candidates outside a school test site may contact NCCT for date and location. Remote testing requires a system check and compliant identification/equipment, and candidates must select their testing time at least five days before the exam date; it is a delivery option for the same examination.
