Licensing authority: National Center for Competency Testing

Initial by examination
Applicability
The current official document directory links the January 2024 NCMA Detailed Test Plan, and the current January 2026 Candidate Handbook adopts the published DTPs. No exact day of initial version, credential or route commencement or expiration is established; date boundaries remain null. This is current applicability, not a claim of unlimited historical applicability.
Certification Conferral
Pass the NCMA certification examination, satisfy the applicable eligibility alternative, submit all required documents and fees, and sign the Code of Ethics; NCCT verifies eligibility. The handbook's common eligibility stipulations apply across all alternatives: all qualifying education and experience must be less than five years old, including the instructor alternative's qualifying teaching and practitioner experience. All required work experience must be obtained within the United States or its territories, including the instructor and military/spouse experience alternatives. Full-time experience means a minimum of 40 hours per week; self-employment does not qualify toward experience, and working as an instructor is not equivalent to practitioner experience. Instructor candidates must meet the same minimum work-experience and critical-skill practice requirements; military candidates without formal military training meet the Experience requirements. Board of Testing members, Subject Matter Experts, verification staff and/or any certification vendors are not eligible to test within two years of their term, departure or role as a certification committee member. Current postsecondary and high-school students must be currently attending their program and verified to be in good standing. These common conditions apply together with each alternative's specific conditions below.

Scheduling
On-demand computer-based testing after NCCT approval, not a fixed annual sitting. Application and, except for current students, eligibility documentation must be received at least 14 days before the requested test date; processing generally takes 3-5 business days and authorization confirms date and location. Applications and fees are valid for one year from submission. Test-site rescheduling is subject to space, at least 14 days' notice and a $25 fee. Remote testing is another delivery option, not another examination.
