Licenses, application pathways and examination requirements

Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.

Mold Remediation Specialist (MRS)

Licensing authority: Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification

Initial by examination
Approval And Fees
Complete application and non-refundable/non-transferable $150 application fee; IICRC approval precedes $300 examination payment and access. Processing normally takes up to ten business days at application and examination-registration stages; do not assume immediate access.
Award
After all certification requirements are fulfilled, IICRC issues a nontransferable individual certificate. Local governmental practice/business requirements must be checked separately; no state adoption is established here.
Delivery
Year-round appointment selection published as 24/7/365 via IICRC online portal and proctor scheduler; required compatible computer, webcam, microphone, private testing area, identity verification and live proctor. Published delivery does not guarantee a particular seat between 2026-11-25 and 2027-02-01.
Documentation
Submit English-language job evidence, employer/company, role, supervisor or HR contact and employment dates; self-employed applicants submit Articles of Incorporation. Supply valid current government-issued photo ID, signed Code of Ethics and Candidate Agreement; submit accommodation request and supporting documentation when needed. Eligibility evidence is subject to audit.
Eligibility
At least one year of verifiable mold remediation field experience; no course, training or other certification prerequisite. Supervisory/inspection work qualifies only where the applicant personally performed remediation. No minimum job count; oldest job start and most recent job end must span at least 12 months.
Eligibility Window
Pay, schedule and pass within 90 days of application approval; initial attempt plus at most one paid $200 retest within that same period. After a failed second attempt, wait one year from the last examination date to reapply. A personal deadline is not the examination-version retirement date.
Examination
One online remotely proctored closed-book multiple-choice examination in US English/Imperial Measurements; pass at 79% or higher. Hands-on experience is a prerequisite, not an added practical exam or required approved course.
