Licenses, application pathways and examination requirements
Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.
Marriage and family therapist associate
Registration for applicants to obtain post-degree supervised clinical experience toward marriage and family therapist licensure under an approved plan.
Licensing authority: Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists · Application information
Extension of associate registration for good cause
- Completed experience
- The Board’s FAQ states that extension after completing the experience requirement is considered only for extraordinary circumstances with sufficient progress on licensure examinations. Examinations remain requirements of the eventual LMFT promotion route.
- Extension request
- Petition the Board for good cause for up to one additional year; apply before expiration, using the Board’s stated request period.
- Normal limit
- Associate registration is normally a transitional period of up to five years.
Place registration on hold and return within 90 days
- Hold request
- Submit a written explanation requesting a hold for up to 90 days.
- Return notice
- Notify the Board in writing within 10 days of a plan to return to practice; absent a return plan after 90 days the registration expires.
- Supervised practice
- Any resumed practice remains under the approved plan and applicable supervision requirements.
Initial associate registration
- Approved plan
- Obtain Board approval of the completed registration request and supervised clinical experience plan, with signed participant agreements and required practice/supervisor information.
- Education
- Meet the education requirements of OAR 833-040-0011 and submit the Board application, fees, primary-source documents and fingerprint-based background check.
- Incomplete experience
- Have not yet completed the post-degree supervised clinical experience required for LMFT licensure.
- Practice
- Do not practice before registration is issued; maintain supervision and proper titles until the full LMFT license is issued.
- Registration boundary
- Registration and approval of the pending licensure application occur together. Competency and Oregon Law and Rules examinations are completed for LMFT promotion, not as prerequisites for issuance of associate registration; OAR 833-020-0011(3) expressly excepts examination requirements for the associate method.

- Renewal
- Renew annually by the first day of the initial-registration month using the Board renewal application and fee; give complete fitness, clinical-experience and current-status information and annual supervision evaluation/hours reports.
