Licenses, application pathways and examination requirements
Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.
Lead Abatement Supervisor Certification
Certification to supervise and conduct lead abatements and prepare occupant protection plans and abatement reports. The controlling discipline enumeration establishes one supervisor certification; initial issuance, reciprocity, annual renewal, three-year recertification and return after expiration are pathways of that certification.
Licensing authority: Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Lead Certification and Compliance Assurance Section · Application information
Add supervisor certification to an active lead professional certification
- Additional discipline
- Provide a valid supervisor course certificate, pass the supervisor exam, submit an initial application for that discipline and payment. MDHHS permits the new discipline to follow the existing training expiration cycle or a new cycle.
- Applicant
- A currently certified lead professional adding the supervisor discipline.
- Application
- Submit a completed discipline-specific application, detailed work experience where required, valid training certificate and payment; MDHHS requires a full Social Security Number or a notarized affidavit that none was issued.
- Exam window
- Pass the supervisor third-party exam within six months of course completion; at most three attempts in that window. After three failed attempts, repeat the initial training before reapplying.
- Experience
- At least one year as a certified lead abatement worker OR at least two years in a related field such as lead, asbestos, environmental remediation, building construction or building trades.
- Initial training
- Successfully complete accredited core lead basics, worker and supervisor training; the supervisor certification overview describes a four-day training course. Training-provider course tests and hands-on skills assessments are course-completion conditions, not independently identified state certification examinations.
- Minimum age
- At least 18 at certification under HPN 120.
Annual renewal when three year training and examination renewal is not due
- Active status
- Do not conduct lead abatement activities until certification is active.
- Applicant
- Currently certified supervisor within the existing three-year training certification timeframe, with no three-year training and exam renewal due.
- Renewal
- Submit a completed renewal application and payment by March 31. The same HPN 120 paragraph expressly adds refresher training and the State exam only every three years.
Official no-examination sources
Effective from 2026-09-22.

Restore lapsed annual certification within the current three year training timeframe
- Applicant
- Supervisor whose annual certification has lapsed, but whose existing three-year training certification timeframe has not expired and whose three-year examination renewal is not due.
- Payment
- Remit payment for missed certification fees and submit the renewal application.
- Scope
- Expiration of the three-year timeframe uses the separate return-after-expiration route, which requires initial training and the State exam.
- Work restriction
- Lead abatement work cannot be conducted with lapsed certification; resume only after certification is active.

Initial reciprocity with an EPA authorized program supervisor certification
- Applicant
- Out-of-state resident holding valid supervisor certification or its accepted equivalent from a non-EPA program authorized by EPA under 40 CFR Part 745.
- Application
- Submit a lead professional application packet, current training course certificate and payment. The certificate must meet MCL 333.5468 and R 325.99301–R 325.99304.
- Experience
- Meet Michigan supervisor experience requirements: one year as a certified lead abatement worker or two years in a related field.
- Minimum age
- At least 18 at certification under HPN 120.
- One time reciprocity
- Reciprocity is awarded only once; three-year recertification requires refresher training and the full Michigan supervisor discipline examination.
- Prior program exam
- Provide successful third-party examination results from the qualifying certification program. Another jurisdiction’s own examination is applicant evidence and is not a Michigan requirement leaf; no examination identity beyond that program-specific slot is specified by this route.
- State exam
- Complete the proctored ten-question Michigan statute and rule reciprocity examination.
Initial reciprocity with EPA supervisor certification
All of the following:
- EPA National Lead-Based Paint Certification Examination for Abatement Supervisors
- Michigan Specific (Reciprocity) Exam (practice unavailable)
- Applicant
- Out-of-state resident holding valid EPA supervisor certification.
- Application
- Submit a lead professional application packet, current training course certificate and payment. The certificate must meet MCL 333.5468 and R 325.99301–R 325.99304.
- Epa exam
- The EPA supervisor third-party certification examination already passed for that certification remains a currently offered registered examination and is included; passing before applying is not an exemption from this reference.

Return after expiration of the three year certification timeframe
- Applicant
- Supervisor who failed to recertify within the three-year training certification timeframe.
- Return requirements
- Retake the initial supervisor course, submit a completed initial application and fees, and pass the State supervisor exam. Work cannot be conducted while certification is expired.
Three year recertification, including holders initially certified by reciprocity
- Applicant
- Supervisor whose three-year training and examination renewal is due, including a supervisor originally admitted by reciprocity.
- Application
- Submit the renewal application, valid course completion certificate and payment by March 31; work may resume only when certification is active.
- Reciprocity limit
- A second reciprocity award is unavailable; pass the full Michigan supervisor discipline examination.
- Training
- Successfully complete an accredited supervisor refresher training course and pass the discipline third-party examination within six months after completion; the core lead basics course need not be repeated. HPN 120 permits refresher or initial training for an unexpired recertification.
