Licenses, application pathways and examination requirements

Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.

Funeral Service Practitioner License

The ordinary professional license for funeral service practice, including embalming and funeral directing.

Licensing authority: Wyoming State Board of Funeral Service Practitioners · Application information

Licensure by examination
Age
The applicant must have reached the age of majority.
Application
Submit the Board’s application and fee, appropriate proof of legal presence, and documents directly from their issuing sources; complete documentation within one year after the Board receives the application.
Apprenticeship
Complete a Wyoming-supervised apprenticeship of at least twelve and no more than thirty-six months (extension for good cause), two thousand working hours, twenty-five embalmed bodies and twenty-five arranged funeral services; submit the signed Apprentice Report.
Board review
The Board may review an application through an Application Review Committee and issue a license with conditions or restrictions under Chapter 12; case-specific conditions are applicant conditions.
Criminal history
No criminal convictions impacting ability to engage in funeral service practice; the Board may waive this provision based on individual circumstances.
Education
An associate or higher degree in funeral service practice or mortuary science from an ABFSE-accredited or equivalent program, or an accredited mortuary science diploma plus five years of funeral service practice in another jurisdiction.
Jurisprudence score
The oral jurisprudence passing score is at least 75%, earned within the most recent twenty-four months; a special Board examination meeting is available with an additional fee.
Official records
Submit official mortuary or embalming school transcripts, an official Conference examination score report, and verification from every jurisdiction in which a funeral service license was held.
References
One actively licensed funeral service practitioner in good standing and two non-funeral-service business or professional references; signed within six months, excluding relatives. The current Board form specifically asks for a Wyoming practitioner reference.
Annual renewal
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Application
Submit the renewal application and annual renewal fee.
Continuing education
For individual practitioners, funeral directors and apprentices, provide satisfactory continuing education, normally eight hours in the license period, with the prorated rule for less than one year of licensure. Facility permits depend on the licensed professional’s qualifications.
Expiration
The license or permit expires February 1 each year under Board Chapter 9.
Standing
Remain eligible under the existing license or permit and any applicable Board restrictions.

Official no-examination sources

Effective from 2026-09-22.

Board reviewed relicensure, reinstatement or reactivation
Board discretion
The Board decides the application and any conditions, restrictions or disciplinary resolution.
Jurisprudence
Chapter 12 Section 2(c) makes a passing Wyoming jurisprudence score subject to applicability; the oral examination remains a leaf. The provision’s reference to Chapter 2 Section 3(e) is a cross-reference error: the current examination provision is Section 3(d).
Other requirements
If nonrenewal voided the license, the separate reissuance-after-lapse route applies and requires the ordinary national examinations as well.
Prior license
A previously issued practitioner license is subject to a Board-reviewed relicensure, reinstatement or reactivation application under Chapter 12.
Restoration after compliance with a court order
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Compliance
The Department of Family Services must notify the Board of compliance with the court order; the Board may then reissue without a hearing.
Eligibility
An existing license, registration or permit was suspended or restricted under W.S. 33-16-511(d).
Limits
This route concerns the court-order suspension or restriction only; expiration, independent discipline and the retained permit’s statutory limits still apply.
