Licenses, application pathways and examination requirements

Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.

Funeral Director License

License to practice funeral service, including embalming and directing; the current statute uses one funeral director identity, not separate director and embalmer licenses.

Licensing authority: South Dakota Board of Funeral Service · Application information

Licensure by endorsement
Application and fees
Submit the Board application and any established fees. If previously licensed outside South Dakota, the issuing board must send the verification of licensure directly to this Board.
Competency
Demonstrate competency by methods the Board determines. The Board current funeral director application includes item 17 asking for the National Board Examination score, so both registered NBE examinations are carried; the statute leaves competency methods to the Board.
Existing license
Hold a current license, certificate, registration or permit from another jurisdiction; the Board must determine that its requirements substantially equal or exceed South Dakota requirements under SDCL 36-1D-1(1). The existing credential is an applicant condition.
Good standing
Be in good standing without disqualifying discipline or refusal, suspension or revocation grounds, unless the Board exercises its statutory discretion to treat those matters as no impediment.
Other jurisdiction examinations
Examinations underlying the already-held license are prior qualification evidence. Another jurisdiction own examination or another country examination is a condition, not a requirement leaf here.
State examination publication
The current controlling SDCL 36-19-21 names the National Board Examination and gives the licensing criteria; current ARSD 20:45:03 repeals the former examination-failure provisions. The Board ADA page says: "The examination given by the Funeral Boards is a state examination." (https://doh.sd.gov/licensing-and-records/boards/funeral/ada-policy/, Information Regarding Accommodation). This lower-ranked accommodation text supplies neither a current licensing demand nor scoring evidence. The current statute and licensure application govern this route; applicants needing accommodations should note that the Board still publishes this statement.
Initial licensure by examination
Application
Submit the Board-prescribed, notarized application and the $225 nonrefundable application fee; an incomplete application must be completed within one year or is withdrawn under ARSD 20:45:03:04.01.
Child support
The application asks whether the applicant owes $1,000 or more in past-due child support and cites SDCL 25-7A-56 as barring issuance or renewal.
Education
Complete at least 90 credit hours at an accredited institution of higher education and obtain a degree or certificate from an ABFSE-accredited mortuary science or funeral service program; mortuary-program credits count toward 90 hours. Official transcripts must be sent directly to the Board.
Exam score record
The applicant must have passed the currently offered National Board Examination; request a certified subject-and-score record directly from The Conference. Passing before application does not remove either registered national examination leaf.
Minimum age
At least 18 years old.
Professional history
Have no act constituting grounds for license denial, suspension or revocation. Disclose the disciplinary, complaint and criminal history requested by the application, subject to SDCL 36-1C-17 and 36-1C-18: related convictions and rehabilitation must be considered, and sealed, expunged or pardoned records cannot be demanded.
State examination publication

The Board ADA page says: "The examination given by the Funeral Boards is a state examination." This lower-ranked accommodation text supplies neither a current licensing demand nor scoring evidence. The current statute and licensure application govern this route; applicants needing accommodations should note that the Board still publishes this statement.
Traineeship cases
Complete 25 acceptable embalming case reports, monthly report cards, assist in directing 25 funerals, and present five sets of arrangements; submit all reports before completion. Activities used for mortuary-program credit cannot also satisfy traineeship requirements.
Traineeship duration
Complete a supervised traineeship of at least one year and 2,080 hours, within three years of initial registration; apply for full licensure within five years of completing the traineeship or repeat it.
Traineeship supervision
A sponsor must be in good standing, licensed for five consecutive years and undisciplined for the past five years. The sponsor must be physically present for the first five embalming cases, then immediately available if competency and professionalism are demonstrated. Sponsor changes require registration before work resumes and written notice within ten days.
Expedited licensure for active duty military personnel or spouses
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Fees
No application or other licensing-body fee is charged under SDCL 36-1B-4.
General application statement
The general director application, rather than the special military statutory criteria, says: "17. I tested for the National Board Examination through The Conference on at (mm/dd/yyyy) City State Furnish certified record of subject and score sent directly from The Conference to the Board office." (https://doh.sd.gov/media/zysbuhu1/funeral-director-application.pdf, page 3 item 17). The statutory military issuance criteria control this route.
Issuance
Submit a completed application. Notwithstanding other law, issuance is required within 30 days unless the Board finds an act that may justify discipline.
Military status
Be an active-duty member of the United States armed forces or the spouse of an active-duty member, subject to military transfer to South Dakota.
Qualifying license
Hold the same or a similar valid license in good standing from another jurisdiction; this already-held license is a condition.
Renewal of an expedited military license
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Continuing eligibility
The underlying license must remain in good standing; the applicant must remain in South Dakota under active-duty orders, active-duty status must continue, and applicable Board maintenance requirements must be followed.
Renewal
Renew the funeral director license annually; SDCL 36-19-37 requires submission in December before December 31 expiration. The Board renewal form asks for return by December 1 and payment of $225; the statutory December submission period controls.
Renewal disclosures
Complete both sides of the renewal form, including requested license, complaint, criminal and child-support history.
Annual license renewal
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Continuing education information
The renewal form requests the number of hours of lectures or continuing education attended in the last year; it does not publish a minimum in this form.
Disclosures
Disclose the disciplinary, complaint, criminal and child-support information requested by the renewal form, subject to SDCL 36-1C-17 and 36-1C-18.
Existing license
Hold a funeral director license and remain eligible for renewal under SDCL 36-19-38.
Renewal fee
Pay the $225 annual renewal fee and complete both sides of the renewal form.
Renewal period
Licenses expire December 31. Statute requires the renewal application during December; the Board form asks: "Please return this renewal form by December 1st." The statutory submission period governs.
Recognition of a covered license under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Affidavit
Affirm identity and complete truthful statements; having read and understood South Dakota requirements and scope of practice; meeting and complying with those requirements; and good standing wherever a license is or was held.
Application
Contact the Board for its SCRA application; provide military orders, a marriage certificate if applying as a spouse, and the notarized affidavit required by 50 U.S.C. 4025a(c).
Background check
The licensing authority may conduct a background check.
Compact exception
If practice is covered by an interstate compact within the statutory exception, that compact and applicable law control instead.
Covered license
Hold a covered professional license in good standing, not revoked or disciplined, without a pending unprofessional-conduct investigation or voluntary surrender during such an investigation.
Relocation
Be a servicemember or spouse relocating residence to South Dakota because of military orders.
Restoration after military service
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Application window
Apply to the licensing authority within six months after separation from service.
Prior status
At entry into military service, have been regularly licensed in good standing and lawfully practicing funeral service in South Dakota, with that status subsequently lost.
Restoration
Be restored to the status held at induction or enlistment without examinations or showing current statutory or rule compliance; only fees current in the application year may apply.
Source confirmation
The short SDCL 33A-2-1 artifact flagged thin was opened and contains the full operative veteran definition and source note.
