Certified Fiber Optic Specialist, Testing

FOA specialist certification for technicians testing fiber optic cable plants and communications systems.

Licensing authority: The Fiber Optic Association, Inc. · Application information

Initial by examination
Applicability
Current live requirements link CFOS/T to the continuously maintained FOA KSAs at the evaluation date. No official start or end date is published for the credential, route or examination; those boundaries remain null. The general CFOT-or-CPCT prerequisites are refined by the explicit CFOS/T CFOT prerequisite. This certification does not confer a state license.
Other Requirements
Meet the age of majority, provide identity/personal/professional data as required, and agree to certification terms and examination confidentiality. Hands-on KSAs are evaluated by instructor or FOA experience review rather than inferred as a distinct practical examination.
Prior Qualification
CFOT certification is required for CFOS/T; preserve as an already-held prerequisite certification without creating or re-investigating its examination.
Qualification Alternatives
[{"method":"FOA-approved school","requirements":"Complete approved specialist training and demonstrate the target knowledge, skills and abilities. Instructor verifies advanced testing skills. Training covers all equipment, methods and standards, connector inspection and cleaning, insertion-loss and OTDR tests, both singlemode and multimode, and measurement errors; advanced SA/CD/PMD methods may be included. Approximately 50% lab time describes course training, not examination weight. Pass the FOA specialist certification exam."},{"method":"Experienced direct applicant","requirements":"Apply to FOA with documented relevant recent field experience; FOA's direct steps require at least two years as a fiber optic technician. CFOS/T experience includes microscope inspection, VFL testing of hundreds of links, insertion-loss tests on hundreds of links, OTDR tests on hundreds of links with sample reports/traces, any other characterization testing such as CD/PMD/SA, and both multimode and singlemode fibers. Manufacturer training may count as partial experience. FOA reviews qualifications and references; a resume and supervisor contact, additional identification and for some specialist skills certifications an industry-experience log may be required. An advisor is assigned after acceptance. Pass a Fiber U certificate-of-completion exam before the requested FOA certification exam; the preparation test does not award CFOS/T and is not submitted as another target examination. The direct application process is English only. The current direct application marks CFOS/T as requiring extra documentation and requires at least one Industry Field Experience log entry plus training detail where applicable."}]
Sitting
After application approval, arrange the certification examination. For individuals FOA permits online or paper sittings with a local proctor who may be a supervisor, instructor, teacher or other professional, but not a coworker or relative. Direct specialist certification instructions specify online examination. No fixed public examination window is stated.
