FOA Certified Fiber Optic Specialist, Design

FOA specialist certification for designers and project managers of fiber optic communications projects, requiring CFOT certification, appropriate knowledge/skills/abilities demonstrated through training or experience, and passing the CFOS/D certification examination; certification does not itself grant jurisdictional licensing rights.

Licensing authority: The Fiber Optic Association, Inc. · Application information

Initial by examination
Administrative
Applicants verify identity and agree to certification terms and examination confidentiality. Direct-program application interaction is in English. Skill/experience evaluation and course completion are not additional separately scored target examinations.
Alternatives
[{"conditions":"Complete the appropriate FOA-approved specialist training with the required KSAs and design case studies, then take the FOA specialist certification examination. The statement that the design course itself has no prerequisite concerns course admission, not removal of the explicit CFOT certification prerequisite.","path":"FOA-approved school"},{"conditions":"FOA reviews documented relevant experience: two years with fiber optic networks including documented network design, evidence of several complete projects, supporting data and a client/customer recommendation; manufacturer/vendor training may count toward experience. The direct process requires passing the corresponding Fiber U certificate-of-completion assessment as knowledge documentation before the distinct FOA certification exam. Submit the application and training/work-experience information, supply additional identity/documentation or interview if required, and await FOA approval and advisor directions.","path":"Experienced-applicant direct certification"},{"conditions":"Candidates trained in other courses may submit evidence for FOA evaluation that the course meets FOA KSAs and skills-training criteria; acceptance is not automatic. Credit for hands-on training at non-FOA-approved schools requires a certificate or written confirmation from the instructor(s) that the training meets FOA KSAs, contains acceptable hands-on skills training, and the applicant has successfully completed the course requirements. The explicit CFOT certification prerequisite and the same CFOS/D certification examination remain required, subject to FOA application review and approval.","path":"Other-course training subject to FOA evaluation"}]
Minimum Age
Applicants must have reached the applicable age of majority. FOA states that this is 18 in most places, 19 in Alabama and Nebraska, and 21 in Mississippi.
Prior Qualification
FOA CFOT certification is required for CFOS/D certification; it is a previously held qualification, not a newly investigated examination dependency.
Scheduling
After application acceptance and preparation, the assigned FOA advisor supplies directions and a link for the closed-book, monitored, timed online direct exam; school candidates take the FOA exam through the approved training route. No fixed examination window is established.
