Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.

Certified Fiber Optic Technician

FOA's primary individual certification for fiber optic technicians, based on broad knowledge, skills and abilities across fiber optic applications.

Licensing authority: The Fiber Optic Association, Inc. · Application information

Initial by examination
Age And Application
Applicant must meet FOA's age-of-majority policy and provide the required identity/application information and certification/confidentiality agreements.
Applicability
The currently linked CFOT program, KSA scope and direct-process requirements apply at the fixed evaluation date 2026-10-25. No official commencement or retirement dates for the certification, route or examination version are published in these sources, so date boundaries remain null. Different random test forms are not new official content versions.
Eligibility Alternatives
[{"path":"FOA-approved school","requirements":"Complete approved classroom and appropriate hands-on training; the instructor verifies skills and abilities. Take the CFOT exam as part of the course, at its end or afterwards."},{"path":"FOA Direct Certification (Work to Cert)","requirements":"FOA must accept an application documenting at least two years of recent relevant fiber optic technician experience, including installing and testing networks. Employer/manufacturer/vendor training may count toward experience. FOA may request a resume, supervisor contacts, further documents, references, additional identity verification or interview. Pass the corresponding Fiber U completion exam as knowledge-preparation evidence before taking the CFOT certification exam. The direct application process is in English."},{"path":"Other training submitted for FOA evaluation","requirements":"Candidates trained at other courses may submit evidence that the course meets FOA KSAs and skills-training criteria for FOA evaluation. Credit for hands-on training at non-FOA-approved schools requires a certificate or written confirmation from the instructor(s) that the training meets FOA KSAs, contains acceptable hands-on skills training and the applicant has successfully completed the course requirements. FOA must evaluate the evidence and approve the application before the certification exam. This preserves the evaluation possibility without promising automatic eligibility, inventing an experience waiver or automatically imposing the experienced-technician direct pathway on every candidate from another course. The same CFOT knowledge exam remains required."}]
Prior Certification
None required for CFOT; primary CFOT is not a specialist qualification. Fiber U completion is documentary preparation in the direct path, not a new certification identity.
Scheduling
School applicants arrange the exam through their approved school. Accepted direct applicants prepare with their FOA advisor, who provides online exam directions and a link when ready; it is a closed-book monitored timed examination taken alone. General FOA instructions also describe locally proctored online or paper arrangements, with a supervisor/instructor/teacher or other professional allowed but no co-worker or relative; direct-specific instructions require online delivery, so paper is not promised for Direct Certification.
Scope Boundary
No state licensing determination, renewal route, specialist certification, withdrawn CFOS/C exam, training qualification or separate Fiber U exam is registered by this submission.
Skills And Experience
CFOT requires verified skills and/or experience in addition to the written knowledge test; this is not represented as another examination. Direct field experience includes multiple installation jobs (preferably premises and OSP), preparation of different cables, fusion splicing and several termination types, and testing using visual inspection, VFL, OLTS and OTDR.
