Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.
ASE Engine Repair (A1) Certification
Licensing authority: National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence
Initial by examination
- Work Experience
- ASE requires passing A1 and meeting the Repair Technician two-year work-experience requirement (full-time or part-time equivalent) for certification; published formal-education substitutions may provide limited credit. Current I-CAR Platinum status satisfies the two-year Repair Technician requirement for the corresponding role, with a copy of the current certificate. Alternatively, four academic years of full-time teaching (or part-time equivalent) as an instructor, not a teaching assistant, in a high school or post-secondary Auto, M/H Truck, or Collision-Refinish program, plus at least 20 hours of technical update training in the last 12 months, satisfies the two-year requirement for the corresponding program type. This instructor option cannot be combined with traditional hands-on work experience or formal-education substitutions. Candidates may take most ASE tests before meeting the experience requirement and receive a score report, but certification and a certificate wait until they fulfill it.
