Licenses, application pathways and examination requirements

Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.

Adjuster

Insurer-side multi-line adjuster license. MCA 33-17-301 also permits qualified business entities. Statutory exclusions in MCA 33-17-102(1)(b) and the particular-loss/catastrophe exemption in MCA 33-17-301(5) are limited exemptions from this otherwise licensed profession. Temporary producer licenses and military inactive producer status are governed separately by MCA 33-17-216 and 33-17-219.

Licensing authority: Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance · Application information

Biennial renewal
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Certification and disclosure
File the biennial CE certification and report final administrative/criminal dispositions as prescribed by MCA 33-17-1205.
Class requirements
Maintain the class’s qualifications and, for public adjusters, the required bond and lawful contracts.
Education exceptions
Commissioner may grant a good-cause extension up to one year or exempt an individual under MCA 33-17-1203(2)-(3). CSI states nonresident adjusters whose residence has no CE requirements complete 24 hours and either Montana CE or a designated CE completion state.
Existing license
License issued under MCA 33-17-301 remains in force until lapse, suspension, revocation or termination.
Individual continuing education
Individuals complete 24 approved credits each 24 months, including at least 3 ethics credits and 1 on Montana legislative/rule changes (MCA 33-17-1203(1)(a)).
Renewal
Renew by the biennial renewal date and pay the appropriate renewal fee; statutory fee amount is established under MCA 33-2-708.

Official no-examination sources

Effective from 2026-09-22.

Montana designated home state qualification by examination
Application
Apply to the commissioner in the approved form; the CSI directs online individual applications through NIPR. The handbook lists a $50 adjuster license application fee.
Background check
Submit to the licensing background examination under MCA 33-17-220; this is a records/background inquiry, not a professional licensing examination. Resident applicants submit fingerprints and the applicant consent form.
Background disclosures
NIPR requires supporting documents for affirmative background-question answers. Non-US citizens must show US work authorization.
Character
Must be trustworthy and of good character and reputation (MCA 33-17-301(2)(d)).
Designated home state
This route qualifies with Montana as the designated home state; NIPR permits electronic ADHS applications. Another jurisdiction’s own examination is an applicant condition only when that jurisdiction is designated; this survey does not investigate it.
Examination result
Pass the corresponding Pearson VUE licensing examination. The handbook defines the passing score as a scaled score of 75.
Exemption inapplicable
Applicant does not satisfy the already-qualified nonresident exemption in MCA 33-17-301(4).
Minimum age
An individual must be at least 18 years old (MCA 33-17-301(2)(a)).
Office and records
Maintain an office in Montana accessible to the public, including a home office if appropriate, and retain usual and customary transaction records for at least five years (MCA 33-17-301(2)(f)).
Residence
Principal residence or business is in a state that does not offer adjuster licensure. Designate a home state in which no business or residence is maintained and qualify as if resident there (MCA 33-17-301(2)(b)(ii)).
Score age
NIPR Montana resident requirements state: "Montana exams are valid for one (1) year from the exam date." This is a score condition, not the end of the exam version.
Separate licenses
NIPR prohibits holding or applying for this insurer-side adjuster class concurrently with Public Adjuster.
Business entity licensure through separately licensed individuals
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Application
Apply in a commissioner-approved form. The NIPR nonresident adjuster page does not accept electronic business-entity submissions; contact CSI for the applicable application.
Entity
A business entity may be licensed whether or not organized under Montana law.
Public requirements
The entity and its representatives must comply with the license class applied for.
Representatives
Every individual exercising license powers is separately licensed for the relevant class under MCA 33-17-301(3); the individuals’ licenses are applicant conditions, with no new entity examination requirement.

Official no-examination sources

Effective from 2026-09-22.

Entity
Business entity, whether or not organized under Montana law.
Individual qualifications
Each named individual must meet the age, residence/designated-home-state, character, background, office and record requirements of MCA 33-17-301(2).
Public requirements
Comply with the insurer-side class applied for.
Representatives
Each individual exercising license powers is named in the business entity license and qualified for the individual class under MCA 33-17-301(3). The corresponding licensing examination is taken by each named individual; examination exemptions apply to qualifying nonresident individuals under subsection (4).
Reissuance of a lapsed license within one year
No examination is required for this applicant pathway.
Continuing education
Meet applicable CE requirements and file certification; MCA 33-17-1205 prohibits conducting business under another license during lapse.
Discretion
Reissuance is permitted by the commissioner and is not automatic.
Lapsed license
Former Montana license lapsed, rather than revoked.
Time limit
Commissioner may reissue if reinstatement fee is paid and certification of completion of the preceding biennium’s CE is filed within one year of lapse (MCA 33-17-1002(2)).
