Licensing authority: BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT · Application information
Initial by examination
- Applicability
- Current owner page labels the matching syllabus and detailed guidance as latest. No official subject-specific initial effective date, retirement date or replacement boundary was located, so all official date bounds remain null. The 2026-11-25 through 2027-01-31 requested booking horizon remains subject to actual channel availability and later official announcements. The task's stricter retirement exclusion before 2027-03-01 has been considered.
- Assessment
- Pass the one independent supervised, closed-book multiple-choice examination, standard 60 minutes, pass mark 26/40 (65%); no calculators. Online or paper based according to syllabus; direct BCS and Pearson test-centre/OnVUE channels are described by current official pages.
- Award
- Successful candidates access/download the certificate through the BCS e-professional candidate portal after BCS emails them; Pearson does not distribute BCS certificates. The certificate's possible use towards the International Diploma does not require completion of that diploma for this standalone Foundation award.
- Eligibility
- No specific prerequisites and no required software-development experience. Around six months of coding experience on any platform is desirable only.
- Language And Adjustments
- Only the requested English examination associated with the currently linked English V1.0 materials is submitted. Syllabus: candidates whose examination language is not their native/official language receive 25% extra time and may use their own paper translation dictionary; electronic dictionaries are prohibited. Reasonable adjustments require following the BCS reasonable-adjustments policy.
- Registration
- Training-provider route: take a course with a BCS accredited provider. Self-study route: book directly with BCS by calling +44 (0)1793 417417. The owner also links Pearson VUE as an alternative. Pearson scheduling requires creating or logging into an account and an accurately recorded individual email address. Actual appointments and seats must be obtained from the selected channel; no seat is reserved or guaranteed by this investigation.
- Training
- Accredited training is strongly recommended, not required. Candidates may take accredited training (minimum 18 study hours over at least three days) or self-study; the owner's exam-only page says preparation usually takes at least 18 hours.
