Initial licensure by examination with Nebraska cosmetology credit
All of the following:
- National Barber Styling Theory Examination
- Registered Barber Practical Examination (assessment without a question bank)
- Application
- Submit the sworn Board examination application, required examination/license fees, birth and school documentation, certified training hours, applicable license certifications, two original photographs, social security number and lawful-presence attestation. Student and non-student forms request submission at least fifteen days before the examination.
- Barber education
- Graduate of a Board-approved barber school or college with 1,800 hours of training, subject to the route-specific credit provisions.
- Cosmetology credit
- Nebraska-licensed cosmetologists may receive 1,000 hours of credit under § 71-208.08. The Board FAQ says they shall receive that credit and complete another 800 hours in a Nebraska barber college; statute-level discretion controls. The 2022 Chapter 12 requires at least eighty orientation hours and the specified reduced clinical service requirements.
- Minimum age
- At least seventeen years old (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 71-204).
- Passing and retesting
- The dated official Title 51 Chapter 9 § 008 sets 75% for each examination. Under § 71-210 only the failed test must be repeated. Under § 71-216.01 two further opportunities precede 500 additional school hours; after 250 hours the Board may waive the remainder upon demonstrated competency, and a subsequent failure requires the remaining 250 hours before a fifth attempt.
- Practical demonstration
- Supply acceptable live models and required tools; complete the Board long-hair and tapered-hair demonstrations with government-issued photo identification.
- School education
- High-school diploma or equivalent education established by passing a GED test. GED is an applicant qualification, not a barber licensing examination leaf.
Licensure by credentials from a nonreciprocal jurisdiction without examination
- Application documents
- Submit the official credentials/reciprocity application, social security number, applicable fees, license certifications from the issuing jurisdiction, birth and educational documentation, proof of active practice where applicable, photographs and requested character/lawful-presence information. The Board decides credentials applications within sixty days and gives notice within ten days of its decision.
- Credentials
- Hold a license from a nonreciprocal state, territory or country and document substantially equivalent licensing requirements. Issuance without examination is subject to Board approval; an adverse decision may be appealed under the Administrative Procedure Act.
- Foreign or prior examinations
- Examinations from another country or another state own licensing system are applicant credentials, not examinations of this state route.
