Formal Education
For the two-year Repair Technician requirement, the official detailed substitution table allows one year credit for a completed ASE-accredited Auto/M-H Truck/Collision-Refinish program; two years for a completed ASE-accredited OEM-sponsored co-op program including its hands-on component; one year for three or more different ASE Entry-Level Certification Program tests; or up to one year for other formal training at two full-time training months (or 200 program hours) per experience month. These substitutes cannot be combined. Programs in the first two categories must be accredited when completed; attach completion certificates, Entry-Level test certificates or transcripts as applicable. Entry-Level tests are optional experience-credit qualifications, not required professional S7 examination dependencies.
Other Experience Options
I-CAR Platinum satisfies the corresponding two-year Repair Technician category with a current certificate. Military applicants provide VMET/DD214/JST for evaluation; Canadian applicants may use a valid provincial automotive trade certificate for the two-year Repair Technician requirement. Self-employment credit requires performing diagnosis and repairs as the owner/operator of a licensed repair business and a current business license; home-garage repairs are excluded. Four academic years full-time (or equivalent) of qualifying instructor service in an Auto/M-H Truck/Collision-Refinish program plus at least 20 hours of technical-update training in the last 12 months satisfies the corresponding two-year requirement. Instructor credit cannot be combined with traditional hands-on experience or formal-education substitutions and requires the principal/dean's letter and training record. ASE retains discretion to evaluate substitutions and other qualifying experience.
Prerequisites
The current S7 materials identify S7 plus approved relevant experience. L1-L4 advanced-level prerequisites are specific to those other tests and are not S7 requirements; no unrelated exam is created or submitted.
Registration
Create/log in to myASE, purchase S7 and pay applicable registration/test fees, and arrange a test-center appointment within 90 days of purchase. Initial S7 uses the national test-center network; G1's remote initial-certification exception does not apply. Bring original valid government-issued photo/signature identification and comply with the official test-center procedures.
Renewal Context
ASE School Bus certification is retained by retesting every five years; recertification is outside this initial route and this investigation's production scope.
Scope
Initial professional School Bus S7 specialty certification only; not Master status, entry-level/student certification, recertification or a Section 609 credential.
Source Priority
The current detailed work-experience instructions explicitly linked by the S7 guide control experience substitutions, including the full two-year co-op credit. The general Need to Know summary's 'up to half' statement is not treated as a prohibition overriding this specific table.
Work Experience
Pass S7 and obtain ASE approval of two years full-time (or part-time equivalent) relevant hands-on Repair Technician experience maintaining, servicing and/or repairing light-duty or heavy-duty motor vehicles. The test can precede experience completion; no certificate is issued until the experience requirement is fulfilled. Document experience using the personal myASE profile and ASE ID.
