ASE School Bus Electrical/Electronic Systems (S6) Certification

Licensing authority: National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence

Initial by examination
Certification
Pass the S6 initial certification test and obtain ASE approval of relevant Repair Technician experience; testing may precede completion of experience, but certification is withheld until the experience requirement is fulfilled.
Education Alternatives
For the two-year requirement: completion of an ASE-accredited Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program gives one year credit; an ASE-accredited OEM-sponsored co-op program gives two years; passing three or more different ASE Entry-Level Certification Program tests gives one year; other full-time training gives one month per two months or 200 program hours, capped at one year. These education substitutes cannot be combined. Programs must be completed in full and accredited at completion; co-op participation must include hands-on work. Required completion certificates, entry-level certificates or official transcripts must be attached.
Evidence Claim Ids
["s6-initial-adoption","s6-registration"]
Experience
Two years full-time or part-time equivalent of hands-on maintenance, servicing and/or repair of light-duty or heavy-duty motor vehicles.
Other Experience Alternatives
Current I-CAR Platinum status satisfies the corresponding Repair Technician two-year requirement. Veterans or active military submit VMET, DD214 or JST for evaluation. A valid Canadian provincial automotive trade certificate satisfies the two-year requirement. Self-employment requires a licensed repair business with actual shop diagnosis and repair, business-license evidence, types of service and duration; home-garage repairs are not accepted. Four academic years of qualifying full-time high-school or post-secondary Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish teaching (or part-time equivalent), excluding teaching assistants, plus at least 20 technical-update hours in the preceding 12 months can satisfy the corresponding two-year requirement. This teaching alternative cannot be combined with traditional hands-on experience or formal-education substitutions and requires principal/dean documentation and training records. ASE evaluates and may grant other appropriate substitution credit.
Prerequisite Boundary
The unique advanced-level L1–L4 prerequisites concern those other examinations; none is added as a dependency of this S6 initial route. The scoped object is individual S6 certification, not Master School Bus status.
Registration And Sitting
Create/use a personal myASE account, purchase the test with applicable registration and test fees, and schedule and take the initial S6 computer examination at a test center within 90 days of purchase. Original valid unexpired government-issued photo ID with photo and signature is required. English is in scope. Remote testing eligibility for recertifiers and G1 does not apply to initial S6.
