Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.
ASE Transit Bus Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (H7) Certification
Voluntary ASE certification in the transit-bus H7 HVAC specialty requires passing H7 and approved relevant work experience or an accepted substitute; it does not satisfy EPA Section 609 refrigerant-management credentials.
Licensing authority: National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence

- Education Alternatives
- For the two-year requirement: completed ASE-accredited Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program gives one year credit; completed ASE-accredited OEM-sponsored co-op gives two years; passing at least three different ASE Entry-Level Certification Program tests gives one year; other training gives one month for two months full-time or 200 program hours, up to one year. These substitutes cannot be combined. Programs must be entirely completed and accredited at completion; OEM co-op includes hands-on participation. Submit completion certificates, entry-level certificates or official training transcript as applicable.
- Experience
- Two years full-time (or part-time equivalent) Repair Technician hands-on experience maintaining, servicing and/or repairing light- or heavy-duty motor vehicles; certification is withheld until experience is approved even if H7 is passed earlier.
- Other Experience Alternatives
- Current I-CAR Platinum satisfies the relevant Repair Technician two-year role with certificate. Canadian provincial automotive trade certificate is accepted for the one- and two-year Repair Technician requirements. Military MOS experience may qualify, with VMET/DD214/JST documentation. Self-employment credit requires owner/operator diagnosis and repair in a licensed repair business, not home-garage repairs, and the business license. Four academic years of eligible full-time teaching (or part-time equivalent), not teaching-assistant work, plus at least 20 technical-update hours in the last 12 months satisfies the corresponding two-year requirement; school principal/dean documentation is required. Instructor alternative cannot be combined or partly met with traditional experience or formal-education substitutions. ASE evaluates substitutions and may credit other appropriate experience.
- Prerequisite Boundary
- The current H7 guide requires its test plus relevant work experience; the FAQ attributes special purchase/sitting prerequisites to Advanced Level L1–L4. Those separate examinations are not made H7 prerequisites. The work-experience three-year row applies to L1–L4, not H7.
- Registration
- Create/use a personal myASE profile and ID; pay applicable registration and test fees, then schedule an appointment and take the test within 90 days of the original purchase date. If testing is not completed within that period, untaken tests expire and fees are forfeited. The test-center route is available year-round. This investigation does not represent H7 as an unrestricted on-demand online test.
- Scope
- Initial H7 specialty certification only, not Master Transit Bus Technician, recertification, entry-level or EPA Section 609 certification.
- Separate Certification Boundary
- The multi-test H1-or-H2 plus H3–H8 relationship belongs to Master Transit Bus status and is not the initial H7 specialty route. The EPA Section 609 quiz is a different credential program, not an additional H7 certification requirement.
