ASE H6 Transit Bus Electrical/Electronic Systems Certification

Individual ASE transit-bus electrical/electronic specialty certification based on passing H6 and satisfying the approved relevant work-experience requirement.

Licensing authority: National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence

Initial by examination
Applicant
An individual seeking first professional certification in the H6 Transit Bus Electrical/Electronic Systems specialty, not Master Transit Bus status, recertification or a student credential.
Experience
Two years full-time (or part-time equivalent) as a Repair Technician, with relevant hands-on maintenance, service and/or repair of light-duty or heavy-duty motor vehicles, documented to ASE. Taking and passing H6 before experience approval yields a score report but no certification until the experience requirement is met.
Instructor Alternative
Four academic years full-time (or part-time equivalent) teaching, not as an assistant, in a high-school or post-secondary Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program plus at least 20 hours of technical update training in the last 12 months meets the corresponding two-year Repair Technician requirement. This teaching method cannot be combined with traditional hands-on experience or Formal Education substitutions. A principal/dean letter and technical update training records are required.
Other Experience Evidence
Current I-CAR Platinum status satisfies the corresponding Repair Technician two-year requirement with the current certificate; qualifying military experience is documented with DD Form 2586 (VMET), DD Form 214 or JST; a valid Canadian provincial automotive trade certificate satisfies the one-year and two-year Repair Technician requirements with a current provincial license. Self-employment credit requires owner/operator work diagnosing and repairing in a licensed repair shop and a current business license; home-garage repairs do not qualify. ASE retains discretion to evaluate substitution and other experience requests.
Prerequisite Scope
The H6 initial certification specialty requires the H6 test and relevant experience; the separate Master Transit Bus multi-test combination is excluded. The three-year experience row and advanced-test reference documents for L3/L4 concern those distinct advanced credentials, not additional requirements of H6. No unrelated advanced examination is added to this route.
Scheduling
Register and pay through myASE, then schedule and complete the initial H6 computer test at a test center within 90 days of purchase. Testing is available year-round; current fall registration is October 10–December 31, 2026. Initial H6 is not the remote recertification option. Bring the admission ticket and valid original identification under the published test-center policies.
Training Substitutions
For the two-year Repair Technician requirement: completing any ASE-accredited Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program gives one year credit; completing an ASE-accredited OEM-sponsored co-op program gives two years credit; passing three or more different ASE Entry-Level Certification Program tests gives one year credit; other training gives one month credit per two months full-time training or 200 program hours, capped at one year. These substitutes cannot be combined. Categories 1 and 2 require full program completion and accreditation at completion; co-op hands-on participation is required. Attach completion certificates, Entry-Level test certificates, or an official transcript showing completed hours/weeks and completion date as applicable. These are experience substitutions, not additional H6 examination leaves.
Validity
Individual credentials are renewed every five years; recertification is outside this initial pathway. No official inception or retirement date for the credential, route or current H6 version is published in the adopted materials, so date boundaries remain null. The specific linked work-experience instructions govern substitution detail; the general Need-to-Know guide is used for delivery and question format, not its broad training-credit summary.
