ASE Transit Bus Suspension and Steering (H5) Certification

Individual ASE Transit Bus suspension and steering specialty certification requires passing H5 and satisfying ASE's relevant two-year Repair Technician experience requirement or an accepted equivalent.

Licensing authority: National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence

Initial by examination
Evidence Claim Ids
["h5-initial-adoption","h5-experience","h5-registration"]
Experience
Two years full-time Repair Technician experience maintaining, servicing or repairing light/heavy-duty motor vehicles, or part-time equivalent. Testing may precede experience completion; certification is withheld until ASE approves relevant experience.
Maintenance
ASE requires retesting every five years to retain certification; recertification is excluded from this initial production.
Other Equivalents
Corresponding I-CAR Platinum status satisfies the two-year Repair Technician requirement with a current certificate. Valid Canadian provincial automotive trade certification also satisfies it. Military experience may qualify with DD Form 2586 (VMET), DD Form 214 or JST. Self-employed applicants must own/operate a licensed repair business and diagnose/repair in its shop; home-garage repairs are excluded and a current business license is required. Four academic years full-time or part-time equivalent teaching, not teaching assistance, in a high-school/postsecondary Auto/MH Truck/Collision-Refinish program plus 20 technical-update training hours in the last 12 months satisfies the corresponding two-year requirement, supported by a principal/dean letter and update records; this alternative cannot combine with hands-on experience or formal-education substitutions. ASE evaluates substitutions and may credit other suitable experience.
Prerequisites
The official special-prerequisite statement applies to advanced L1–L4, not H5; no L3/L4 prerequisite is evidenced for this specialty.
Registration
Use a personal myASE account and purchase H5 with applicable registration and test fees; work-experience documentation uses the personal ASE ID. Testing is year-round by appointment at Prometric centers, within 90 days of purchase. No initial-H5 remote eligibility is asserted.
Scope
Individual H5 certification only. Master recognition requires H1 or H2 plus H3–H8 and is not this route.
Training Alternatives
For the two-year requirement: completed ASE-accredited Auto/MH Truck/Collision-Refinish program credits one year; completed accredited OEM-sponsored co-op credits two years with required co-op hands-on participation; three or more different Entry-Level test passes credit one year; other training credits one month per two months full-time or 200 program hours, up to one year. These substitutes cannot be combined. Programs must be accredited at completion; completion certificates, entry-level certificates or official training transcript are required. These are optional experience substitutions, not extra required professional tests.
