ASE Transit Bus Drive Train (H3) Certification

Voluntary ASE certification in the Transit Bus Drive Train (H3) specialty, requiring the H3 test and approved relevant work experience.

Licensing authority: National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence · Application information

Initial by examination
Applicability
The current H-series owner page lists H3 and links the obtained guide, which names Test H3 and expressly adopts its complete task list. No official start/end date for the exam content, credential or initial route is stated in the obtained applicable material; date boundaries remain null. No historical coverage is inferred.
Documentation
A personal myASE profile and ASE ID are required to submit the work-experience form; submit employment details, applicable attachments and certification of accuracy. ASE may verify job history, deny false submissions and evaluate other substitution requests individually.
Education Restrictions
The four formal-education substitutes cannot be combined with each other; permitted education credit can be combined with additional hands-on experience. Submit program completion certificates for accredited program alternatives and the specified certificates/transcripts for the other alternatives. The detailed policy expressly linked by the H3 guide supplies the specific OEM co-op 2-year credit; the general Need-to-Know guide's summary about up to half the experience is not used to erase that expressly enumerated alternative.
Experience
Two years of full-time hands-on Repair Technician experience, or the part-time equivalent, maintaining, servicing and/or repairing light-duty or heavy-duty motor vehicles, subject to ASE documentation and approval. The test may be taken before completing experience; certification is withheld until the experience requirement is fulfilled.
Formal Education Alternatives
["Completion of an entire ASE-accredited Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program, including the listed current or grandfathered standards: 1 year credit toward H3's 2-year requirement; program must be accredited at completion.","Completion of an entire ASE-accredited OEM-sponsored cooperative program, including its hands-on cooperative portion: 2 years credit toward the 2-year requirement.","Passing 3 or more different ASE Entry-Level Certification Program tests: 1 year experience credit, with copies of certificates; these are training-credit alternatives, not additional mandatory professional examination leaves.","Other training: 2 months full-time training or 200 program hours equals 1 month credit, up to 1 year toward the 2-year requirement, supported by an official transcript with completed hours/weeks and completion date."]
Instructor Alternative
Four academic years of full-time instructor experience (or part-time equivalent), not teaching-assistant work, in an applicable high school or postsecondary Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program, plus at least 20 hours technical update training in the last 12 months, satisfies the corresponding 2-year requirement. This alternative cannot be combined with hands-on work or formal-education substitutes. Attach a principal/dean-signed school letter detailing experience and technical update records using Other Documentation. The separate six-year instructor rule applies to L1–L4, not H3.
Other Exam Relationships
The Master Transit Bus designation has the separate combination (H1 OR H2) AND H3–H8; it is outside this single-specialty initial credential. L3/L4 are distinct Advanced Level tests with their own prerequisites; those requirements are not imported into H3. No other live examination is identified as mandatory for this H3-only route in the applicable H3 certification and experience policies.
Other Experience Evidence
["I-CAR Platinum satisfies the 2-year Repair Technician requirement for the corresponding role; attach the current certificate.","Veterans and active military may submit DD Form 2586 (VMET), DD Form 214, or JST; qualifying military occupational specialties are subject to ASE evaluation.","A current valid Canadian provincial automotive trade certificate is accepted as evidence meeting the 2-year Repair Technician requirement.","Self-employment credit requires an owner/operator performing diagnosis and repairs in a licensed repair business; home-garage repairs are excluded. Describe services and duration and attach the current business license."]
Registration
Purchase H3 in myASE and pay applicable test and registration fees; schedule and take the test within 90 days of purchase. Testing is year-round; the current fall registration window contains the evaluation date. Initial H3 requires an appointment at a test center. Remote recertification and the A-series renewal app are not initial H3 routes. Bring the required original valid government-issued photo identification with signature; the myASE account name must match the primary ID. Follow the test-center identification and security policy. After a Pass or Fail result, wait 30 full days before purchasing and scheduling the same test again.
Scope
Initial individual professional certification in Transit Bus Drive Train H3 only; English knowledge test. This is voluntary certification, not an assertion of government practice authority.
Term
Individual certification must be renewed every five years; renewal examinations and expired-certification routes are outside this task.
