ASE Transit Bus Diesel Engines (H2) Certification
Licensing authority: National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence
Initial by examination
- Applicability
- Current official H2 listing, linked Transit Bus guide and ASE initial-certification and experience policies support the current evaluation date. No official start or end dates for this certification, route or examination version are published in these materials; date boundaries remain null, not retrieval dates. No separate practical, oral or writing assessment is specified in these initial certification steps. The printed percentage discrepancy is preserved, and the existing shared primary section-weight rule permits practice allocation without an erratum or any change to official numbers; formal acceptance remains required for handoff.
- Experience
- Pass H2 and obtain ASE approval of two years full-time (or part-time equivalent) relevant Repair Technician experience maintaining, servicing or repairing light-duty or heavy-duty motor vehicles; passing before completing experience gives a score report but does not yet earn certification.
- Instructor Alternative
- Four academic years full-time equivalent teaching as an instructor, not teaching assistant, in a high-school or post-secondary Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program, plus at least 20 hours of technical update training in the last 12 months, satisfies the corresponding Repair Technician two-year requirement. The instructor method cannot be combined with traditional hands-on experience or formal-education substitutions; submit the principal/dean letter and training records.
- Other Experience Evidence
- Current I-CAR Platinum status satisfies the applicable Repair Technician two-year requirement, with certificate. Military experience requires DD Form 2586 (VMET), DD Form 214 or JST for evaluation. A valid Canadian provincial automotive trade certificate can satisfy the Repair Technician two-year requirement. Licensed repair-business owner/operators may document self-employment performing diagnosis and repairs with a current business license; home-garage repairs are not accepted. ASE retains discretion to evaluate other experience and training substitution requests.
- Prerequisite Boundary
- ASE's FAQ distinguishes unique prerequisites for advanced L1, L2, L3 and L4 tests. Those examinations are not H2 prerequisites in the H2 series description or initial certification instructions and are not added to this route. The additional H3-H8 plus H1-or-H2 combination concerns separate Master Transit Bus status, outside this task.
- Registration
- Create a personal myASE profile, register and pay, then schedule and take the initial H2 at a test center within 90 days of purchase. Initial H2 is not eligible for the remote option reserved for recertifiers and the initial G1 exception; no account was created and no purchase made during research.
- Scope
- Initial professional H2 Transit Bus Diesel Engines certification only; not Master status, recertification or entry-level student certification.
- Training Substitutions
- For the two-year Repair Technician requirement: complete an ASE-accredited Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program for one year credit; complete an ASE-accredited OEM-sponsored co-op program for two years credit; pass three or more different ASE Entry-Level Certification Program tests for one year credit; or other full-time training at two months/200 program hours for one month credit, up to one year. These four substitutes cannot be combined. Applicable programs must be completed in their entirety and accredited at completion; OEM co-op requires its hands-on portion. Submit the applicable completion certificates, entry-level test certificates or official training transcript. These are alternatives for experience credit, not additional professional H2 examination leaves or new production targets.
