ASE Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles (F1) Certification

Voluntary ASE certification for technicians who pass the F1 compressed natural gas vehicles test and document relevant work experience.

Licensing authority: National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence

Initial by examination
Certification
Pass initial F1 and obtain ASE approval of documented relevant Repair Technician work experience: two years full-time or part-time equivalent maintaining, servicing or repairing light-duty or heavy-duty motor vehicles. Testing can precede experience, but certification and certificate are withheld until it is fulfilled.
Documentation
Use the candidate's personal myASE profile and ASE ID; submit the work-experience form, work history, experience details, truthful certification and attachments. ASE may verify history, deny certification for false information and exercise published discretion on substitutions or other qualifying experience.
Formal Education Alternatives
For the two-year Repair Technician requirement: completion of an ASE-accredited Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program, including MLR/AST/MAST and current or grandfathered standards, gives one year credit; completion of an ASE-accredited OEM-sponsored co-op gives two years; passing three or more different ASE Entry-Level tests gives one year; other training gives one month credit per two months full-time training or 200 program hours, up to one year. These substitutions cannot be combined. Programs must be completed in entirety and accredited at completion; co-op requires the hands-on portion. Attach program certificates, Entry-Level test certificates or official transcripts showing hours/weeks and completion date as applicable. Entry-Level tests are an optional experience-credit condition, not mandatory examination dependencies or production targets.
Instructor Alternative
Four academic years full-time (or part-time equivalent) teaching as an instructor, not teaching assistant, in a high-school or post-secondary Auto, M/H Truck or Collision-Refinish program, plus at least 20 hours technical update training in the past 12 months, satisfies the two-year Repair Technician requirement corresponding to the taught program. This alternative cannot be combined with or partially satisfied by traditional hands-on experience or formal-education substitutions. Attach a principal/dean letter on school letterhead detailing teaching and update-training records. The separate six-year/three-year-experience provisions for L1-L4 do not change F1's two-year requirement.
Other Experience Alternatives
Current I-CAR Platinum satisfies the two-year Repair Technician requirement only for its corresponding role, with current certificate. A valid Canadian provincial automotive trade certificate satisfies the one- and two-year Repair Technician requirements, with current license. Veterans/active military submit DD Form 2586 (VMET), DD Form 214 or JST; actual military work is evaluated. Self-employment requires owner/operator diagnosis and repairs in a licensed repair business, current business license and details of services and duration; home-garage repairs do not count.
Prerequisite Boundary
The F1-specific certification policy identifies F1 plus work experience. The FAQ's advanced-level prerequisite notice expressly concerns L1-L4 and does not establish L3 or L4 as prerequisites for F1. No advanced-level exam is added to this route or research list.
Registration
Create/use myASE, purchase F1 and make a test-center appointment. Initial F1 is a computer-based test-center examination. Complete within 90 days of purchase. Present required valid original government photo/signature ID matching the myASE legal name and comply with current test-center procedures. Accommodations require ASE approval before registration/scheduling.
Validity
Certification is renewed every five years; F1R recertification is outside this initial task. No official starting or retirement dates for this credential, route or current F1 outline are asserted. Current adoption is evidenced by the live F1 page linking this guide.
