ASE Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Certification

ASE certification in the A2 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle specialty requires the A2 test and relevant repair-technician experience.

Licensing authority: The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence

Initial by examination
Instructor Experience Alternative
Alternative to the two-year A2 Repair Technician experience route: four academic years of full-time teaching, or part-time equivalent, as an instructor rather than a teaching assistant in a high school or post-secondary Auto program, plus at least 20 hours of technical update training in the last 12 months. The program must correspond to the Repair Technician requirement. This instructor alternative cannot be combined with or partly satisfied by hands-on experience or Formal Education substitutions. Submit a school-letterhead letter signed by the principal or dean detailing teaching and technical update training records.
Timing
A candidate may take the test before satisfying experience, but ASE withholds certification until the experience requirement is fulfilled.
Work Experience
Repair Technician: two years of full-time hands-on experience or part-time equivalent for A1-A9; ASE may recognize specified training substitutions.
