Licenses, application pathways and examination requirements

Each license and applicant pathway has its own requirements and exemptions. Choosing practice questions does not determine your eligibility.

Certified Energy Procurement Professional

AEE individual certification recognizing competence in energy procurement, trading and marketing of electricity and natural gas.

Licensing authority: Association of Energy Engineers · Application information

Initial by examination
Applicability
Current AEE English US program and linked Body of Knowledge Version 1.0 were investigated as of 2026-10-26. No official starting or ending applicability dates were established; null date boundaries do not assert applicability to every historical period. The overview's document number, upload path and copyright year are not effective-date evidence. No other language or state examination is included.
Approval And Scheduling
Submit the certification application and separate fee. For US remote testing, AEE processes the application and sends confirmation; the candidate must then receive a ProctorU invitation and schedule an available appointment within the assigned examination window. The portal label Exam Scheduled does not itself reserve an appointment. In-person testing is also available under the official fee/waiver procedures.
Award
Pass the shared CEP knowledge examination and obtain Certification Board final review after fees and the application file are complete. Examination scores are kept on file by the Certification Director for three years. Applicants have three years after taking the examination to follow up and complete their certification application; after three years, they must resubmit the application and retake the examination.
Education Experience Any Of
["Related bachelor's degree OR Professional Engineer (PE) OR Registered Architect (RA), AND at least three years of related work experience.","Four-year unrelated bachelor's degree AND at least five years of related work experience.","Two-year associate degree AND at least five years of related work experience.","At least ten years of related work experience.","Current Certified Energy Manager (CEM) status as an existing qualification; this does not create another exam requirement for CEP."]
In Training
AEE permits applicants lacking full eligibility to apply for In Training certification. This is temporary status rather than an award of full CEP or a waiver of the full-eligibility conditions. It uses the same certification examination, lasts six years, cannot be renewed, and must be upgraded by application before expiration after full eligibility is obtained. Timely upgrade does not require another sitting of the certification examination; no additional exam version or bank is created.
Related Definition
Related degree in science, engineering, architecture, business, law, finance, or a related field; related experience in energy, building or facility management, real estate, procurement, or brokering. All work experience must be full time paid employment within the related field. Internships, graduate research, and additional education are not acceptable as work experience. The certification board alone decides whether experience is acceptable. Applicants must provide employment start and end dates and detailed job duties relevant to the certification.
Training
Complete the defined approved CEP training program before examination; course enrollment alone does not register the candidate for the certification examination. Candidates have three years from completing training to get certified. Candidates taking the exam through a Training Partner still have three years to gain certification, with specific examination windows provided by that partner.
